Locations

The book uses the names of countries and towns as they were written back in 1945. Since this time, the romanization of the Chinese language has changed. Burma (Myanmar today) and India ceased to be British colonies. The book provides the current name of locations after the first mention of the name. This page provides a simple, alphabetical reference for all the locations mentioned in the book. For completeness, all Ledo/Stilwell Road key terminals are listed as well as towns whose names were not changed.

For the Chinese language, Pinyin, adopted in 1958, is the current romanization of Chinese characters. Pinyin replaced the Wade-Giles romanization system.

For Burma, the names of some cities changed in 1989.

For India, the main changes involved the division of the country into India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
